CESAM (Circulaire des Effets Spéciaux AMateurs, later renamed Circulaire des Effets Spéciaux Animés et du Maquillage starting from issue #5) was a quarterly newsletter dedicated to special effects makeup.
Published between 1988 and 1990 by FX Compagnie (the special fx division of CCCO), CESAM was a half A4 format (10.5 cm x 14.85 cm), stapled, black-and-white publication. It quickly became the go-to reference for information, tests, and techniques in special effects makeup.
The small editorial team included Gaëtan Laloge, the creator and editor-in-chief, Christan Andrey (Cinema Technical Sheets section), David Bonin (Literature section), and Marc Dumas (Role-Playing Games section). The talented main illustrator, Jean Meunier, was later joined by a group of incredibly skilled artists, including Philippe Pellé, Ma Ly, Étienne Butterlin, Nils Hamel, Éric Diard, Frédéric Lespine, and others.
CESAM was so successful that all original issues are now out of print. The covers shown on this page are from the original editions.
In 2007, all 11 issues of CESAM were compiled into a 478-page white-cover book, CESAM n°1 à 11. This edition is now out of print.
A second edition of the book CESAM n°1 à 11, featuring a glossy black cover, is available here.
